Kristy Bordine Moves on to New Magical Discoveries

Happy Hour Honoring Kristy

5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17
At Doc’s Motorworks
1123 S. Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78704

KristyThe Writers’ League is saying to goodbye to one of the most popular staff members ever. After four years of dedicated service, Program and Membership Coordinator Kristy Bordine is taking on a new position as a paraprofessional at Premier High School, a charter school in Austin. She’s excited to have the new challenges of working in a school environment — and even more delighted by the fact that she will be working the same hours as her husband, Jared, who teaches at the school (carpooling, anyone?!).

Her last day at the Writers’ League was Friday, Sept. 11, and she starts her new job on Monday, Sept. 14. Her playful spirit and genuine interest in every single WLT member will be missed. We hope she’ll continue to post the occasional Magical Discovery!

Let’s send Kristy off in style at the September WLT happy hour. We hope you’ll come by to thank her for everything she has done for the Writers’ League and to meet and welcome Sara Ortiz, who is stepping in as a part-time administrative assistant.

If you’d like to send Kristy your best wishes and regards or stay in touch with her, please send her a note or email in care of the WLT office.

Kristy’s Magical Discovery

Oh no! Predators and Editors is being sued! They’re a long-time online resource for writers navigating the murky waters of the publishing business.
On a completely separate note, I’m leaving the Writers’ League for new adventures. Wish me luck!

Here are a couple of web resources you may need to look into:

  1. McSweeny’s
  2. Fiction Factor
  3. Everyone Who’s Anyone

Come to the monthly program tomorrow, say hi, and check out the office! You know members get to check books out of our robust lending library, right?

Heads up – the Texas Book Festival exhibitor booth price jumps after the first of September. If you’re thinking about selling your book (and roping in a fellow author to defray the cost) now’s the time to jump on it. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Also, the next WLT happy hour will be held…drumroll please….inside! Doc’s has tables in the crisp, dry air conditioning saved for us. Come join us for a beer or salad and lots of great writer chat!

If you’re on LinkedIn, join the Writers’ League of Texas group. It’s a nice networking tool.

I just finished Oliver Sacks’ “An Anthropologist on Mars,” and  started “The Dancing Wu Li Masters,” by Gary Zukav. The “Wu Li” book is for book club…I’m skeptical so far.

I’m obligated to inform you that it’s my birthday which is very, very exciting.

Kristy’s Magical Discovery

It’s vacation time at the League office! Amanda just got back from a trip to visit her parents, Cyndi is off to celebrate her sister’s birth on Monday, and I’m flying to Vegas Tuesday to celebrate my 10th wedding anniversary (July 30th, 1999). We’ll be back refreshed and whole on August 3rd!

My new book club was lots of fun. The next book is “The Dancing Wu Li Masters” by Gary Zukav but I’m sneaking in “An Anthropologist on Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales” by Oliver Sacks in between assignments.

Kristy’s Magical Discovery

There have been a lot of discoveries at the League since I last posted.
#1 Amanda discovered that she’s 30. Happy birthday, Amanda!
#2 We all discovered how amazing our interns are. Thanks a ton to Amanda S., Rebecca, Sara, and Beth for rocking the conference!
#3 I’ve discovered what I can tolerate. My home was burglarized two days before the conference and I survived. Yay for resilience!
#4 I’ve joined a (lay) science book club and am reading The Drunkard’s Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives by Leonard Mlodinow. I’m taking a sabbatical from fiction.

A volunteer offered this piece of advice:  If you speak in a second language, try writing in it. You’ll find another voice.

League friend and pervious Executive Director John Pipkin’s upcoming release is getting some crazy good reviews. Check out what the  Washington Post has to say. How about Kirkus? Go John!

We need folding chairs!

If you’ve been to a monthly program you know that we’re in need of metal folding chairs.  We’re hunting them on Craigslist, but if you have some to donate we’ll make it worth your while!

*This isn’t particularly magical but I DO love sitting after a long day

This week I’m reading Pride and Prejudice because I never have.

Big thanks to our new intern Rebecca Grace! The months leading up to the Conference are our busiest and any help (in OR out of the office) is greatly appreciated.
