Upcoming Austin Poetry Society Events

Saturday March 31st is the DEADLINE for APS Annual Awards entries.

Only members are eligible to enter. Entries must be either received or

postmarked no later than March 31st. Guidelines and a List of Contests

Twenty-nine contests offer over $2000 in prizes to be awarded in our

May meeting (but you don’t have to be present to win).

March 16, Friday, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Share Your Stories, each Third Friday at Twin

Oaks Library, South 5th at West Mary. Host: Ralph Hausser.

March 17, Saturday, Noon. Million Musicians March for Peace, in

Collaboration with Occupy Austin. March and make music from the

capitol to city hall.

March 17, Saturday, 1:30 p.m. Austin Poetry Society monthly meeting. This

meeting is dedicated to learning more about the rescheduled Austin

International Poetry Festival, now planned for September. Leaders in AIPF will

be present to fill us in and sign us up. The 20th anniversary will

happen September 27th through 30th.

March 22, Thursday, 7:00-9:00 p.m. APS Fourth Thursday Open

Microphone, now four years old, features Claire Vogel Camargo and

Susan Rooke. An open mic follows featured readers. This month we

observe the 10th anniversary of the death of Austin’s favorite poet,

Albert Huffstickler. We invite you to bring poems by or about Huff and

April 1, Sunday, 3:00-5:00 p.m. KinCity reading at BookWoman, 5501 A-105 Lamar

Boulevard. The KinCity Reading Series alternates between Austin and San

Antonio, with four poets from each city reading together. Bring a friend,

neighbor, or spouse and be there a little early for refreshments and live

April 6, Friday, 7:00 p.m. Three top-flight poets present their work

in “Underground Poets: A Reading for Radicals,” at Brave New Books,

1904 Guadalupe (near MLK). Come to hear Thom the World Poet (Austin),

Ken Jones (Houston), and Robert Wynne (Burleson/Fort Worth). An open

mic will follow the features.

April 20-21, Lamesa, Texas. Forrest Fest brings together a splendid array of

May 3, Thursday through May 6, Sunday, Round Top Festival Institute. Spend a

few days with top grade national poets in small town Central Texas. Depending

on how much wonderful poetry you can stand, prices range between $50 and $125,

Barbara Burnett Smith Aspiring Writers Project

Aspiring Writers of Mysteries, Cozies, Suspense, Thrillers and True Crime are invited to submit a one-page synopsis and the first 500 words of your unpublished manuscript to the Barbara Burnett Smith Aspiring Writers Project. Aspiring Mystery Writers that are selected will each be matched with a published Mentor Author for one-on-one sessions, and recognition at the Barbara Burnett Smith Aspiring Writers Event on May 20, 2012. This is not a contest – there is no judging and no fee. It is a wonderful opportunity for writers unpublished in the mystery field to get to talk with and be mentored by published authors. WAR VETERANS ANTHOLOGY

Writer and editor Henry F. Tonn is calling for submissions for a veterans of war anthology. Fiction, nonfiction, and poetry are requested from war veterans, their family and friends. Experiences from any war are permitted, including work from veterans of foreign countries. All work must be in English. The book will be perfectly bound and hard copy. Author Louise Erdrich to hold readings at Texas State, Porter House

The Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center and the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University-San Marcos present readings and book signings from nationally recognized author Louise Erdrich April 5-6.

Erdrich will speak and sign copies of her books at the Wittliff Collections located on the seventh floor of Alkek Library on the Texas State campus April 5 at 3:30 p.m. She will give a second reading the following day at the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center, located at 508 Center St. in Kyle at 7:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

Onion Creek Literary Club President seeks Speakers

As president of the Onion Creek Arts & Literary club , I am now seeking speakers for the 2012-2013 season. We are a group of ladies who meet monthly at the Onion Creek club with a speaker from local art &literary venues, We meet on the 2nd Fri- Sep to May at 10am and follow the program with lunch at the club with the speaker as guest. The author, Melissa Williams, will discuss the way she used her own experiences with her pets to create the fictional characters in Iggy the Iguana and Turtle Town series while teaching the use of archetypes, character development, conflict resolution, and original storyline development tactics.

Upcoming Austin Poetry Events

In honor of National Poetry Month, Debra Winegarten, winner of the 2011 Poetica Magazine contest for her book, “There’s Jews in Texas?” has organized a series of Jewish themed readings for the public. On Monday, noon, April 23rd, she will host a “Lunch and Learn” at the Topger Center fo Jewish Life, The Abe & Annie Siebel Building, 2105 San Antonio Street, Austin, TX 78705-5521. She will discuss the dual roles of being a successful author and marketer in the changing world of publishing.

On Sunday, April 29th, from 3-5pm at Congregation Agudas Achim at the Dell Jewish Community Center, 7300 Hart Lane, the Sisterhood and Hadassah are co-sponsoring a Jewish Poetry Reading, featuring Debra Winegarten, Rabbi Neil Blumofe, Dr. Constance Scharff and Neena Husid. People interested in being readers should submit no more than 3 Jewish-themed poems to Debra, via email at sociosight@aol.com no later than March 31, 2012 for consideration.
